SMSA meeting 16/11/17 - in the staff room from 8pm. Class reps are expected to attend but everyone is welcome. Come and see what we do or get involved! The meeting should be about an hour.

Bonfire Night Saturday 4th Nov.  Gates open 5.30pm   Fireworks at 7.30pm.   There are a few tickets left but we will NOT be selling them on the door- YOU MUST BUY IN ADVANCE.  The last few tickets will be on sale in the playground at drop off and pick up on wed, thurs and fri next week.  Kids are £6  adults £12  Family ticket- 2 A and 2C- £30  We need people to help to sell on the bar, work on the gate, set up, and most importantly marshalling. The event can not go ahead unless we have enough marshals. Any queries email the SMSA. 

Panto - The St Michael's panto is really what St Michael's is all about and we need you!  Acting and singing skills not required!  We need people for-set building, prop making, costume planning, making sets & painting, behind the scenes- cans, stage hands, make up, actors, singers, dancers.  We particularly need anyone who has any know how with lighting.  In short anyone who thinks they can help- we will happily accept your help!

We try to have pantos with lots of parts so lots of parents, kids can get involved.  Please don't feel the auditions will be stressful, we don't do traditional auditions and it's very informal. Kids from school in years 4, 5 and 6 are eligible to join in the dance troops. There will be rehearsals after Christmas in evenings and on some weekends. Please check panto dates and make sure your child is available before they sign up.

Children are only allowed to join in if a parent or carer offers help in some way. This can involve one of the jobs above or if this is not feasible for you we ask that you work on the bar for at least 3 performances, or chaperone the kids backstage for at least 2 shows.

Over the next 3 weeks email the SMSA to tell me if you can help with panto and what you would be happy  to help with.  If your child would like to be in a dance email their name, class, year and also what job the parent is offering to do.  Please also note if you have a role in the panto we expect parents to pay for their kids costume and potentially contribute to their own costume. We try to keep costs to a minimum.

Parents' DIsco - Saturday 14th October. 8pm. It's a really fun night, come and join us. £15 pp incl. food. If you can't join us, support us by purchasing a raffle ticket in the playground at pick up today or tomorrow.

Summer Fair - Congratulations to everyone involved for a fantastic afternoon, particularly Rachel and the Summer Fair team. Almost £10K taken on the day and we expect a net income of over £5,000.

Fun Run - Sunday, 11th June.  Registration starts at 2.15pm and the first race is 3pm.  There will be the normal refreshments including a BBQ and snacks, tea/coffee, soft drinks and a 'bar' with beer, wine and Pimms!  Click here for the full race schedule.  We still require volunteers to act as marshals - please email smsahighgate@gmail.com .

Red Nose Day Cake Sale - Thank you for all the donations.  We raised an impressive £220 which increased to £275 with the benefit of Gift Aid.

SMSA Meeting - Thursday, 29th September - Main points : The Head Teacher requested that the SMSA fund bark chippings for the KS2 climbing frame £1800) and plastic wallets for all children to display their work in (£800).  Both requests were unanimously agreed.  It was also agreed that a new marquee would be purchased for use at SMSA events (cost c. £700). Cake sale balances will be circulated to Class Reps.

Kirima School - Helen Brough has done a fantastic job raising money for this school in Uganda and will be handing over to teacher Abigail Wegner in September.  Message from Helen : "Dear Parents, Carers and Children. Thank you all so much for the continued support of the 3 children from Kirima School. Summer Fair - Saturday, July 2nd - Over £5,000 raised!.  A fantastic day with over £5,000 rasied for the school.  A huge  'thank you' to Rachel and all of the Reps. and special mention to the BBQ team of Bill, Bryce, Andrew and John; thanks to Troy and Maurice for their work, plus a commendation to Mrs. Parker for putting her head in the stocks!

Footie Fun Day - A great afternoon  in glorious sunshine.  Congratulation to all the players and thanks to Bill, Andrew and Bryce on the BBQ, Alison and her team on the refresments stall including Sharon, Zoe, Marianna, Alicia, Aoidin, Polly and Anna, the brave refs including Steve, Colin, Richard, Stef, Fran and Mario, and well done to the team managers for organising the players.  Particular metion goes to the year 6 classes who proved that football is NOT a game of 2 halves, but 3.

SMSA Meeting - Thursday, 26th Feb. 7.30pm.  There will be a vote on whether to amend the SMSA Constitution and changes the financial year-end from 31st March to 31st Juily.  To view the documents in advance please click on the links : 'Notice of Amendment', 'Resolution to alter the Constitution', 'new Constitution' and 'notes to the Resolution and existing Constitution with amendments highlighted'.

SMSA Meeting, Thursday, January 21st, Key Points : Agreed spending - £10,250 to supply and fit a new climbing frame in the Key Stage 1  playground. The Governors' Premises Fund will pay for the new ground surface;  Library - £250 approved for purchasing books and graphic novels.  Change to Year-End - from 31st March to 31st July subject to agreement.  All members (parents/carers, staff, support staff) will be invited to attend the next SMSA meeting to vote on this proposal.  Further details will be sent out before half-term.

Xmas Fair Sunday 6th - This year's Fair was possibly the best ever, with lots of fantastic stalls, great food, entertainment and over £6,000 raised!

SMSA Meeting - Thurs. 26th Nov.  Key Points - Bonfire raised approx. £4,000 and Battle of the Bands approx. £2,300.  Parents are invited to send in suggestions for future projects that the SMSA can help fund (So far - a bubble/balloon over the cage play area; floodlights for the cage; a minbus;).

Battle of the Bands Sat. 21st November - Congratulations to the winners "Dead Stones of the Unbeaten Consciousness".  A fantastic sold-out event with over £2,000 raised!  Well done to James and Bryan for organising; Andrew Rogers for equipment and sound mixing; Troy and Maurice for their support and help; and the door/vote sellers/bar and food team - Laurence, Rachel, Alison, Clare, Jo, Hind, Chloe and everyone unmentioned!

Children in Need Cake Sale - Raised £85.  Thanks to everyone who donated cakes.

Bonfire and Fireworks Night - Another fantastic event with £5,000 raised.  A massive 'thank you' to everyone who helped make this a memorable night with almost 1,000 people coming through the gate.  Special thanks to Bill and his BBQ team; Rachel and her fantastic helpers on the bar and food stall; Jess and the glowsticks gang; Alison and Caroline on the gate; the marshals for keeping everyone safe; the Year 2 children for making the Guys (Mrs. and Mrs. Fawke); Alicia and Paul for building the bonfire; Troy and Maurice for all their hard-work right through to almost midnight on Saturday night; and Ghislaine, Alison, Trixie, Joel and Grace for cleaning up on Sunday.

SMSA Accounts to 31 March 2015 - download here.  Key points :The SMSA made a number of significant contributions to the school infrastructure during the year, including: - £21,400 on play pods; £13,300 on playing field drainage; £6,300 on a new climbing frame; £6,100 on pavilion and shed refurbishment, £4,300 on classroom visualisers.  In addition, funding was also provided to the school library for books and a new IT system, £325 for cleaning of the pond and almost £6,000 from cake sales was spent on classroom supplies not provided or covered by the School.

Visit to Kirima by the Hales Family - Heidi, Toby, Rhiannon and Jess have returned from Kirima and have brought back some fantastic photos of the school and the new TV that St. Michael's raised the money for. SMSA Meeting - Wed. 25th March.  Main points - Wish List Spending Agreed :
Grounds - £400 for soil, seeds and tools. Maths Week - £1,000 to enable Maths week in April for all years. Library upgrade - £1350 to cover an extensive up-grade of the Library software and training for staff, to allow children to review books at home, parents to see what their children are reading, and facilitate taking books out from the classrooms as well as the library. Annual fee of £580 from 2016 (1st year free).
Balance of loan from Governors re. drainage of field, to be repaid (c.£6,300) immediately. Approx. gross income for year to 31/03/15 forecast to be c.£65,000.
Donation of £1,000 made to the SMSA by former pupil William Schwitzer, from the Estate of his father Mat. William's mother Joan taught at the school and published in 2002 the history of the school for the 150th anniversary (“Model for London: Victorian Farm School to Modern Primary – The Origins and Development of St Michael’s Highgate”). His two children also attended the school between 1996 and 2005. This money will be used to enhance the library.
Giles Taylor was appointed as a Trustee and Co-Treasurer. We are pleased to welcome him to the team and thank Karel McNamee for her many years of hard work.
Cake Sale Balances - will be confirmed at the start of the new term. If you have not already emailed with details of deposits made this school year please could you do so before the start of the new term.
Football Funday, Sunday 26th April - Volunteers required to help run the event - scheduling, refereeing etc. (Please email smsahighgate@gmail.com). More information will be sent out after Easter. Each class will need a manager and help will be required on the BBQ and drinks stalls. There will be Mums and Dads matches ......

Quiz Night - Congratulations to the winning team from Morpurgo class and commiserations to the runners-up, Magorian.  A fantastic evening hosted with charm and wit by Mark Dolan, with questions set by Amy Brown.  Many thanks to all the helpers - Laurence, Claire, Jo, Jess, Rachel and everyone else who helped make this a fantastic evening, with over £1,000 raised!

February SMSA Meeting - Key Points - Karel is stepping down as co-Treasurer after 4 years and the SMSA Committee would like to place on record its thanks for all the hard work and effort she has put in during her time managing the accounts and financial records of the SMSA.  A replacement will be sought to take over her role.  Panto - raised approx. £4,400; Kirima cake sale raised £250 and they should have enough funds to purchase a new TV and DVD player.

PANTO - DICK WHITTINGTON.  The reviews are in and the consensus is that it was 'the best St. Michael's panto ever'!  Congratulations to everyone involved.  The DVD screening will be on April 16th.  Venue TBC

SMSA Meeting - Thursday, 20th November.  Key Points : Governors' surgery - on Saturday. 6th December, between 10am and noon.  Please email the Governors on governors@stmichaelsn6.com .Play Pods - completed & ready to go.  Haringey H & S inspection due on 28/11.  Awaiting date from Play Pod company for kids to begin using them (subject to availability of external supervisors). Agreed Wish List Items - Grounds/Maintenance - New leaf blower (approx. £200), 50% contribution to tractor service (approx. £250).  Up to 11 new visualisers (to connect to the interactive whiteboards) - approx. £4,500.  These items have proved to be very useful in classes and this request was proposed by the Head Teacher and supported by the Governors Curriculum Committee.  Visualisers act in the same way as overhead projectors, allowing sheets prepared by teachers or children's work to be shown on the interactive whiteboard; Gardening Club - a paid, after-school club run by external experts will start in the Spring. Bonfire Night - approx. 950 attendees, with almost £4,500 net raised.; SMSA Bank account - signatories changed at last; Children in Need Cake Sale - raised £270; Cheap Theatre Tickets - check the SMSA website.  More shows will be available soon; Draft Accounts were presented.  Gross funds raised - circa £53,000.  Net funds raised circa £33,000.  Approx. £29,000 donated to the school.  Audited accounts will be circulated when available; Panto Auditions - coming soon.  Dates to be confirmed; Xmas Fair - Sunday, 7th December.

Bonfire Night - Friday, 7th November. Thank you to everyone who helped on the night.  A great event with over 900 visitors and fireworks that were better than ever!
 
Kirima Fundraising - The SMSA, the School and St. Michael's Church have a long relationsip with Kirima School in Uganda and for many years the SMSA has sponsored 3 children at a cost of £540 per annum.  We will be discussing this item at the SMSA meeting on Thursday.  In addition, Kirima is trying to raise money to pay for a new, large-screen TV for the 400 children to watch (to replace the 20" TV they currently use), plus mosquito nets and water pumps.  Please click here to donate via Virgin Money Giving.  The target is £2,000.

BATTLE STATIONS! - Battle of the Bands is coming round the corner fast (Nov. 22nd) and we need YOUR help to make it a success. We have a good number of acts in place but one or two more are needed to make it fly.  Solos, duos, acapella, instrumental - all flavours are welcome.  We want to hear in particular from any guitar/bass players or drummers out there. Even if you don't have a band, please get in touch. Autumn Hoe Down, Saturday 13th September -"Can I say a huge thank you to all those people who made the Hoedown a big success. I hope everyone who attended had fun which was the main aim of the event.  Firstly, to all the guests who supported us by buying tickets and thanks to all of those people who helped set up and clear up - especially Troy and Maurice who tirelessly help us at these events.
 
The raffle and auction was amazing and people dug deep providing fantastic prizes and auction items. The parents that bid on the auction items with such generosity was hugely appreciated and really saved the fundraising of the Hoedown.
 
I would also like to thank Heath Meek who provided us with our superb marquee from Casablanca Marquees at an amazing price and Dan from the Bull who provided us with first class pints.
 
A huge thank you to Mark Dolan who ran the auction in an extremely entertaining way and helped us make some great money on very worthy auction lots. I am pleased to say we made £3600 profit which is at least a step towards the field works. Best wishes". Rachel ( vice chair SMSA).

SMSA May Meeting - Please click here for the Minutes.  Main points - Play Pods : A decision is still awaited but the school is optimistic that the Lottery Application will be granted.   Drainage Works to the Playing Field - The work to improve the drainage of the playing field has been costed at £16,000.  The SMSA has agreed to finance these works and they will be carried out over the Summer Holidays.  As the SMSA does not have the funds to finance the works at present the Governors have agreed to lend the money to the SMSA and to cash-flow the works.  It is intended that the funds will be repaid by the end of the 2014/2015 Academic Year.  Security Gate - The new security gate to the lane will be fitted in July and will be fob operated.  Access for parents via the lane will NOT be possible after installation.  Governors Fund - the Governors re-iterated their request for parents to make a Standing Order donation.  Camp Out - Forms will be available at the AGM on July 3rd.  New Constitution - a draft version will be sent to all parents for comments.  The new constitution will be agreed at the AGM on 3rd July.

APRIL SMSA MEETING - Thursday, 24th April.  
Key Points : The SMSA has committed all of its available funds to the end of the year.  The works to the pavilion have been completed (new hot water system, new windows and decorations), accoustic improvements to some classrooms will be done in the Summer holidays, new climbing frames to the KS2 playground will installed in the Summer holidays, new planters to the KS1 playground - the layout and design of these will go ahead once the decision on the Playpods lottery appplication has been received as the position of a Playpod will influence where the new planters are placed, the Reading Hut has been upgraded and decorated.  Drainage to the field - it was agreed that this will be the next major fund-raising purpose and certain events will be ring-fenced to fund this plan, specifically the Fun Run, Football Funday and the Camp Out.  The cost of the drainage works are approx. £15,000.
New Constitution - a draft of this will be circulated for comments before voting on it at the AGM in July.  The current Constitution can be viewed here.
End-of-Summer Ball -  big, grand, fun event is being planned for mid-September.  Details to follow soon.

School disco Monday 24th Junior Hall - Thanks to all the helpers, particularly Jessica and Andrea.  A good time was had by all and almost £400 was raised.

SMSA Meeting - Wednesday11th December - Key Points :
OPAL - Outdoor Play And Learning;
Mrs. Ross has asked for more donations of small toys - cars, animal, etc.  These are very popular with the kids and are kept in the playground for break times.
Playpods - the lottery applications has been made and we should hear within 60 days.  If this is successful there will be a seminar for parents next term from the OPAL consultant.  There are several options being investigated for the Pods themselves so that they are both practical and attractive.
Wellies - the children will be able to take a spare pare of wellies into school so that they can use the field whilst it is wet and muddy.  These wellies will be left at the school on the bespoke welly racks.  A request for unwanted wellies may be made.  Wellies should be clearly marked with the owners name - perhaps on the outside of the wellington in big letters!
 
Volunteering;
The school would like the forms returned by this Friday (13th).  Volunteers are needed to help in classes OTHER than their own children's.  Those that can attend on a regular basis can volunteer to help with reading and a short training session will be held in January (see form).
Maths volunteers also required - a training session will also be held.
General Volunteering - if you are unable to commit to a regular session other help is often required in the classes eg. putting up displays and projects etc.
 
Signing-In;
All parents are reminded that they must sign-in if they will be inside the school building during normal hours.  They should also insure that they sign-out!  (Assemblies are excluded).
 
Cake Sale;
There is an unknown deposit of £142.41 made on 14/10/13.  Please email  smsahighgate@gmail.com  if you recognise this amount!

There will be another Governors' Surgery in the New Year.

Panto;
Feb. 6, 7 and 8.  Details of signing up for the parents who would like to be in the Mums and Dads dancing and singing groups will be sent out shortly.
 
School Zebra Crossing;
Those parents who are unhappy with the crossing guard outside of the school should contact Highgate School - office@highgateschool.org.uk  - for the attention of John Lewis.  Some parents felt that the crossing person actually makes it more dangerous for St. Michael's families as drivers assume he/she is the 'official' person and will stop the cars for all children, and if the crossing guard doesn't step out then it is safe to drive across.  In practice, the crossing person does not stop the traffic for St. Michael's children and this may cause confusion.  If you have any experience of this please pass it on to Highgate School.
 
                                                   
Christmas Fair - 1st December 2013 - This year's Xmas Fair was a huge success, held on a lovely December day with lots of visitors enjoying the festive spirit.  A huge 'Thank You' to Rachel and Claire and their team of helpers, and congratulations to everyone for helping to raise approximately £8,000.  This year some external stalls helped to create a Christmas Market atmosphere and the class stalls were all great fun with parents and kids enjoying themselves and spending money!  Santa's grotto was a huge success with timed-slots reducing waiting times and the photo booth (kindly donated by Google for the day) was great fun for the whole family.  The BBQ and Cafe kept everyone refreshed and the hampers were over-flowing with goodies this year.  Well done to everyone involved.
 
 
 
Bonfire Night - 8th November - Another big success and generally considered "the best fireworks ever!". A big "Thank You" to Steve for arranging the fireworks andproviding the music to go with the display (and providing most of the pallets for the Bonfire), to Laurence for organising the event, to Ruth and her team on the stalls, to Bill and the BBQ team, to Matt for braving the rain to get Guy Fawkes onto the rocket, to all the stewards (some of whom were stuck in the school car park for the whole evening!) who helped make it a safe and secure event, to the ticket collectors who stood in the playground for several hours, and to the Saturday morning volunteers who helped pick up the remains of the fireworks.  And of course a huge thanks to Troy and Maurice for helping beyond the call of duty.  Please go to 'Gallery' for some great photos.

Friday 27th September - Kirima Assembly. Revd. Key Stage 40 Quiz Night - Thursday, 2nd May, 7.30pm.  A great night was had by all (particularly the winners from Hubble class) and many thanks to the quizmasters, Glen and Toby, and the team who provided a delicious supper.

Help/Volunteers needed - There are a number of parents leaving at the end of this school year and new blood is required!  Netball - new 'coach' needed next school year - NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!  Co-Treasurer - ideally with some book-keeping experience, to help with the SMSA accounts and be a Trustee.  Head Librarian - a love of books but no other experience necessary, and the opportunity to shadow the current Librarian next school year.  These positions require no more than a few hours a month and lots of support and advice will be given.  Please contact laurencempenn@gmail.com if you are interested in these or if you would like to offer help in any other way.

PANTO 2013 - Casting for speaking parts only.  It's that time of year again.  If you would like to be treading the boards in the SMSA 2013 Pantomime, you need to come to casting on Tuesday 27th November or Wednesday 28th November, 8pm in the Junior Hall.  If you are interested in being a dancer or in the chorus, there is no need to attend.  This casting call is for speaking parts only. Performance dates will be Thursday 7th February, Friday 8th February, Saturday 9th February (matinee and evening shows on the Saturday).  Please ensure that you will be VERY available in the run up to and including these dates before committing to a part!

Artwork Raffle - This fabulous piece of art (below), kindly donated by artist Helen Brough, was raffled at the Quiz Night and rasied almost £400.  The winning ticket was drawn by Helen and the winner was Laurence Penn, which was rather suspicious as he was the person standing next to her holding the pot with the tickets in!  Did someone say fix?

Garden Club Help - There will be 2 gardening sessions on Wednesday and Friday lunchtime, 12.30 to 1.30pm, and 2 or 3 helpers are needed.  Please sign-up under the arch from Monday 27th.  No experience is necessary and you can volunteer for as many or as few sessions as you can manage.  You will need to be 'List 99' checked (go to the office - notification takes up to 48 hours and there is no charge).

Panto - Well done to all the parents and kids who helped make 'The Wizard of Oz' a huge success.  Four excellent, sold-out shows and standing ovations all round!  See 'Gallery' for Panto photos.  A huge 'Thank You' to Anscombe & Ringland for their support.

SMSA Meeting 14th Sept - Main points :  Teachers wishlist items agreed; 4 large carpets for Yrs 3 & 4 class rooms, money counter for office.  SMSA to provide approx. £10,000 funding to school in 2011-12 for core activities.
